SARK PRESS CONFERENCE STILL SET FOR 2 P.M. — We’ve been told no delays expected and Steve Sarkisian is expected to meet the media here at 2 p.m. A few possible commits still out there but sounds like they’ll go ahead either without knowing — or maybe some quick decisions.
WALKER SIGNS WITH UCLA — UCLA has just announced the signing of Kenneth Walker of Richmond, Calif., who visited UW last weekend and as of Monday was expected to commit to the Huskies. He was originally a Cal commit.
HERE’S A PICTURE OF MILES’ SIGNING ANNOUNCEMENT — Here it is.
CYLER MILES JUST ANNOUNCED HE WILL SIGN WITH WASHINGTON — So that makes 24 for the class and two QBs.
STILL WAITING ON MILES —– As of 1:07 p.m., still waiting on an announcement from Cyler Miles. A good Twitter to follow is @gryancasey.
WALKER ALSO HAS NOT SIGNED — Kenny Walker of Richmond, Calif., who had been thought leaning to UW and then it was reported last night would sign with UCLA, also has not signed anywhere yet. Unclear what’s going on there.
OWENS NOT SIGNED — Gotten a few Tweets that Tairen Owens, who was the first commit for this class, has not signed at UCLA, where he decided to commit to instead after Demetrice Martin left to go there in December. Hard to tell if UW would be interested now.
BACK AT IT — I’m at UW at 12:15 p.m. Nothing really new to report at the moment but I’ll start to look around the web and see what’s out there.
ANNOUNCEMENTS COMING SOON — Cyler Miles is set to announce at 1 p.m., Randall Goforth at around 2 p.m. and Brandon Beaver around 3:15. This seems like a good time for me to drive up to UW, so that’s what I’m now going to do. I’ll resume this when I get up there.
WHO ALL IS IN:
As another refresher, here are all the players who have signed. Bios and other info is linked for all of them in other sections below:
Interesting that the moderator on the UW chat said the Huskies could get “a handful” more. Obviously they are hoping for Cyler Miles and Brandon Beaver and maybe Randall Goforth.
UW UP TO 23 — While I was gone UW announced the signings off Jaydon Mickens and Kalei Auelua. So the number is up to 23.
BRIEF LULL — As of 10:47 a.m., no new signees for UW. Unclear if anything going on with Mickens or what, but he’s obviously the one to watch for at the moment. I have to step away from computer for about 10 minutes here but will update when I get back.
PAYTON OFFICIAL TO UCLA — Brandon Huffman of Scout.com reporting that Jordan Payton has signed his LOI to UCLA. What a crazy one that was. One of the weird things is a few people were reporting yesterday it was going to be UCLA that he would say on TV. Then he said UW and spoke in such a manner that made you think there was no way he’d turn back. Will be interesting to read his comments. (This was posted at 10:30 a.m.)
QUICK OVERVIEW — Time for a little overview of the class as it sits at 10:17 a.m. UW has 21 players signed, three of whom would be considered surprises — DE Pio Vatuvei, OL Taylor Hindy and CB Cleveland Wallace. Vatuvei had been a USC commit but may have been a victim of the numbers game, a happy circumstance for UW.
Wallace was a commit to OSU but began reconsidering when UW hired Keith Heyward away from the Beavers, and that ultimately helped bring him north. Hindy was apparently simply under-the-rader and not known to be being recruited by UW. But he adds depth at a key spot, and may be a kid they got on late when some of the other top OL targets went elsewhere.
UW has lost one big recruit in WR Jordan Payton, who is signing instead with UCLA in maybe the shocker of the day on the West Coast as he had committed to UW on national TV less than 24 hours ago.
UW is also still waiting for an LOI from Jaydon Mickens, and QB Cyler Miles, the latter of whom is apparently not as solid as he had indicated on Monday and texted reporters today to say he will sign at 1 p.m. Seattle time from either UW or USC.
UW also is not getting Michael Rector, but that’s been known for a while that he would instead head to Stanford, one reason the Huskies got so aggressive going after other receivers in the last few days.
WOOCHING ON FIRE: Kind of a cool video of Psalm Wooching “on fire:”
[do action=”custom_iframe” width=”600″ height=”400″ url=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/V2T3Ln_c5qM”][/do]
WOOCHING IN — UW has just announced signing of FB Psalm Wooching, so he’s No. 21. And here’s his bio.
HERE IS FILM OF WALLACE — Cleveland Wallace becomes the latest surprise signee today. Here’s some film:
[do action=”custom_iframe” width=”600″ height=”400″ url=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/0Oi3KK677G8″][/do]
SO WHO IS NOT IN? — As of 9:57, the four players yet to have their LOIs announced by UW that were reported as having publicly committed are Cyler Miles, Jaydon Mickens and two kids from Hawaii, Psalm Wooching and Kalei Auelua. The time difference is likely the reason for the delay in the two Hawaii kids and Miles has been explained. Unclear if Mickens is simply a delay or something else.
WALLACE OFFICIALLY IN — UW has officially announced signing of Cleveland Wallace. Here’s his bio. So that’s 20 LOIs in as of 9:55 a.m.
ALL WHO HAVE SIGNED — As a refresher, here are all the players to have signed as of 9:43 a.m.:
Adds up to 19, I think.
WALLACE TO UW — Oregonian reporting CB Cleveland Wallace, a three-star from San Jose, will sign with UW. A direct result of hire of Keith Heyward.
BROSTEK, MCDANIEL ALSO IN — Sorry, more stuff away from computer for a second. UW is officially at 19 with Shane Brostek and Ryan McDaniel also now in.
BANKS, DURKEE IN — Sorry, on the phone for a few minutes there. In the meantime, UW announced LOIs for P Korey Durkee of Gig Harbor and juco DT Josh Banks. So up to 18 signees as of 9:30 a.m. Here is Durkee’s bio and that of Banks.
MILES COMMENTS — Cyler Miles just texted me as well that he will sign at 1 p.m. Seattle time and has LOIs for both UW and USC. I think he’s texting all media he has dealt with recently to let them know, which is a nice move on his part. I had talked to him briefly Monday and last week for about 10 minutes or so for the story that ran in Monday’s paper.
DYLAN COZENS TO ARIZONA — A UW target, the DE from Scottsdale will instead sign with UA.
RIVALS.COM REPORTING MILES TO SIGN AT 1 P.M. — But that he will do so to either UW or USC. Apparently has LOIs for both schools in hand (which isn’t uncommon, by the way) and will pick one or the other.
MCDANIEL IN —- UW announces signing of LB Ryan McDaniel from North Torrance, Calif. He’s LOI No. 15 at 9:15 a.m.
PAYTON TO UCLA? As of 9:12 a.m., there’s a report that Jordan Payton will sign with UCLA. He’s already committed to USC, Cal and UW, doing so to much fanfare yesterday.
CORY ENGLISH NOW IN — The Auburn High C/G is No. 14, and it comes at 9:10 a.m.
DEVIAN SHELTON ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE — The Inglewood safety is one who it’s thought could still flip to UW though USC is the leader.
COONS IN — UW officially announces PK Travis Coons. He’s No. 13.
LINDQUIST IN — Huskies officially announce QB Jeff Lindquist of Mercer Island. He’s No. 12.
MILES UPDATE — Here’s the latest on Cyler Miles — he didn’t attend school’s signing ceremony. And interesting to note story says Auburn now also a player for his services.
ERICH WILSON BIO IN — Here it is, and you’ll note he’s officially Erich Wilson II.
DAMION TURPIN IN — UW announces signing of DT Damion Turpin. So there’s No. 11. Here’s his official UW bio.
ELDRENKAMP IN — UW officially announces signing of Bellevue’s Jake Eldrenkamp. He’s No. 10 at 8:50 a.m.
HINDY ALSO A LONG SNAPPER — UW’s profile of Hindy notes he’s also a long snapper, a spot UW needs to fill this year with the graduation of Brendan Lopez.
HUSKIES ANNOUNCE ERICH WILSON — So he’s No. 9 at 8:45 a.m.
LA TIMES ON VATUVEI — Here’s the take from the LA Times on UW luring away Vatuvei. 8:40 a.m. as I type this.
RODGERS SIGNS — UW announces Blake Rodgers, so he’s No. 7 in the fold.
PROFILE OF HINDY — He was a pretty off-the-radar guy. He’s signee No. 6 for UW and another OL, something the Huskies need. Here’s one profile of him. And here’s his Scout.com profile, which shows him with no other offers.
HUSKIES ANNOUNCE TAYLOR HINDY — In another surprise, UW has announced the signing of OL Taylor Hindy of Chaminade High.
Here are some higlights:
[do action=”custom_iframe” width=”600″ height=”400″ url=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/vMg4Q2Y64lg”][/do]
TWO THOUGHTS ON VATUVEI — Sounds like some academic issues may have cooled USC on him as the Trojans have to be ultraselective with their scholarship limitations — so here’s a direct example of that helping UW. Also, no question another pickup due largely to Tosh Lupoi and the other new coaches.
HUSKIES OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE SIGNING OF NATHAN DEAN — He’s LOI No. 5. Here’s his GoHuskies.com profile.
UW ANNOUNCES SHAQ THOMPSON HAS SIGNED — They do so at 8:18 a.m. making him LOI No. 4 for the Huskies. He’s listed at 6-2, 215 and as a safety.
VIDEO OF VATUVEI:
[do action=”custom_iframe” width=”600″ height=”400″ url=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/LFt6McAOxWw”][/do]
And here is his UW profile.
HUSKIES PULL OFF SURPRISE WITIH PIO VATUVEI — Well, here’s the one surprise so far as UW signs a DE long linked with USC. That’s a real addition to the defensive line.
VIRTUAL HIGHLIGHTS — UW is featuring some virtual highlights of signees here.
DARIEN WASHINGTON IS LETTER NO. 2 — Here’s a profile of the second player to sign with UW today.
MILES UNCERTAIN? — The Denver Post is reporting that Cyler Miles remains undecided about what to do and may not sign today. Here’s a Tweet on that. Miles had said on Monday that he was solid to the Huskies. But USC may have made another run at him.
KENDYL TAYLOR FIRST LETTER IN — Kendyl Taylor’s is the first official letter in at 8 a.m., and it apparently also crashed the UW site.
RODGERS, THOMPSON APPARENTLY ON WAY IN — Varying reports on Twitter that Shaq Thompson and Blake Rodgers have signed their letters. But still nothing from the school as of 7:57.
ALSO ON TWITTER — I’m also trying to follow along with things on Twitter today. Here’s that link.
ANOTHER RANKING — UW up to No. 28 in the 247Sports ratings.
7:43 — And as Ted Knight might say “we’re waiting.”
RECTOR TO STANFORD — As we’ve reported on here a lot the last few days, expect Michael Rector to sign with Stanford today. Chris Egan of King-5 has also just reported it. And I see a few others now announcing it, as well.
CAN UW FIT THEM ALL IN? — An obvious question is where UW stands with its numbers. The big question is always getting to the 85 by September. The Huskies should have no issues with that, assuming the normal attrition. But I will break that down completely once we see who they actually sign today. UW had five walk-ons on scholarship last year. Those are year-to-year, and if they need room, they simply won’t do that again. Getting to the numbers hasn’t been a real issue for Sarkisian at UW yet.
NO. 1 RECRUIT STAYS HOME — The big national story, as we wait for news from UW, is that the No. 1 recruit in the country is staying home to play at Missouri for longtime former Husky OC Gary Pinkel. A big get for him.
PAC-12 SIGNING DAY LINKS — Ted Miller with lots of good links around the conference this morning.
ANY SURPRISES? — 7:22 and still no letters yet. As we wait, worth wondering if there will be any “‘surprise” signings. Lots of rumblings yesterday but no firm confirmations of anyone. But given the ties the new guys on the staff had to so many players in California, won’t be a surprise if there is a surprise, so to speak.
UCLA WAY OVER NUMBER — A really interesting school to watch today is UCLA, which by LA media accounts would be about 10 over the 85-man limit if it takes every player currently committed. Will be worth wondering if some of those commits end up elsewhere today.
THOMPSON EXPLAINS DECISION — Some good stuff here in a story in today’s Sacramento Bee from Shaq Thompson explaining his decision to commit to UW.
7:10 AND STILL WAITING — One of the best things about signing day is UW can finally talk about the recruits. As soon as they sign they post the bios to the players and I will link those here, as well. And those usually list a position. Most seem pretty straight forward but still always interesting to get the confirmation on where the school sees them playing. Steve Sarkisian is set to address the media around 2 p.m.
OREGON RISING — The early Pac-12 story is Oregon winning a couple of key battles and rising to No. 9 in Scout.com ratings. Ducks may be the team to beat there.
7:06 — And still waiting for UW’s first letter.
EXPECTING 25 OR SO — Expecting UW to sign at least 25 today, with 22/23 known commits and at least five others still considering the Huskies.
LETTERS START AT 7 A.M. — One thing to recall is that letters can begin being signed at 7 a.m. where a recruit lives. So you are seeing some conference teams get letters already from recruits who live in different time zones. So far, that doesn’t apply to UW.
MAX PREPS HAS UW AT NO. 24 — Huskies in just about all the recruiting ranking top 25s at the moment, including No. 24 in MaxPreps.
NO FAX CAM THIS YEAR — UW is not having its Fax Cam this year, as is explained on a live chat on its site.
PREVIEW — What’s become a day as big as a game itself — National Letter-of-Intent Signing Day — has arrived.
And to cover it, I’m going to try to do this as we used to do the old game threads — at least for the first few hours, the time when most of the letters figure to come rolling in. That means I will just put the new info at the top and move the old info down (and I’ll try to put the times on the individual entries, as well).
As a reminder, UW is expected to hold its press conference at 2 p.m. But UW will announce the signings as they come, and I’ll pass those along, as well as other news and notes that may arise.
So buckle up.
