I know I’m a little late on this — the hazards of the June period when other duty calls — but the Huskies got a big commitment today from receiver Darrell Daniels of Freedom High in Oakley, Calif.
Daniels is rated four stars by both Rivals.com and Scout.com and committed this morning while on an unofficial visit to the school. Scout.com calls him “the top receiver in the West for the Class of 2013.”
A 6-3, 210-pounder, he caught 30 passes for 526 yards and seven touchdowns last year and continues an emphasis for UW under coach Steve Sarkisian of recruiting big receivers.
Daniels had offers from schools such as Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan and UCLA.
Daniels is one of several high school players reported to be on unofficial visits to UW this weekend, others including DE Joe Mathis of Upland, Calif., and safety Tahaan Goodman of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
ESPN.com, which also rates Daniels four stars, said in its scouting report:
“This guy is a galloping horse of a weapon. He is the ideal combination of strength and size and is a load to handle in the open field after the catch. Daniels powers off the line with surge and intimidates DBs. Is tall and thick with a wide wingspan. Is built like a taller Justin Blackmon and he may be faster. Is a smooth athlete. … Will make some catches in traffic. Will cradle and body catch some balls thrown at his midsection. Is tough and aggressive. Not afraid to go over the middle. He has deceptive, competitive speed and excellent foot quickness. Can get on top of defenders quickly because they don’t know how to judge his speed. … Over the course of the spring and summer we would expect this guy to really heat up. He is a playmaker and the measruables alone make him one to watch. Daniels has big play ability for the BCS level.”
