The first day of practice for the Huskies was also the first practice of any kind for Deontae Cooper since August of 2010, when he suffered the first of two injuries to his left knee.
Cooper didn’t do a lot as the team will try to ease his way back. But for today, it was enough — and what he hopes was a significant step on the way back to getting on the field this fall.
“Just to get out there with the guys and Husky football,” he said. “It’s been a long time and I’ve been excited to get out there and play again. Putting on this purple and gold is the best thing about it, coming out here and looking at he guys, meeting new teammates, looking at the new teammates. It’s a great feeling.”
A lot better, he says, then what he’s had to go through the last two years.
“Watching when you want to be out there playing with your teammates is the toughest thing,” he said. “But you’ve got to consistently grind and get through it because your situation can always be worse.”
Cooper said he feels healthy and that he has the same speed as before the injuries. “That’s not any concern,” he said. “My concern is just getting my feel back.”
