A quick look at the scholarship numbers

Given some of the attrition since the start of the season, I’ve had some requests to review the scholarship numbers.

So here it is, broken down by class, and going with the players and years and scholarship designation as listed on the current UW roster:

Seniors — 12
Juniors — 16
Sophomores — 19
Freshmen — 37

If I’ve done my math right, that adds up to 84, one below the 85-man limit. That number does not include true freshman WR Dwayne Washington, who is awaiting clearance by the NCAA and is not listed on UW’s current roster.

So if he gets eligible, that would put UW at 85, going by the current roster (which should be noted, classifies former walk-ons Jonathan Amosa, William Chandler, Evan Hudson, and Cole Sager as scholarship players).

So there’s potentially some wiggle room there if something were to fall into UW’s laps. But for the most part, UW appears full on scholarship players for this season.

The low senior number (and sorry to point that out and have some of you accuse me of making an excuse for the team this season, but it is what it is — it’s sort of like reporting the score) could be read to mean Washington won’t be able to sign a 25-man class next February. But the usual caveat applies — an awful lot can happen between now and signing day in February and I’d imagine UW plans on signing close to a full class.

UW currently has 102 players on its roster, including walk-ons. The limit for camp is 105.
