Arizona game thread

ROUT IS ON — I’m having lots of internet trouble here. But I doubt few of you need updates now, anyway. Arizona now leads 52-17 with 11:32 to play and this game is over.

UW will fall to 3-4 on the second, 1-3 in Pac-12 play, and now needs to win three of its last five games to get bowl eligible, four of the last five to match last year’s win total. Steve Sarkisian also falls to 22-23 as head coach, the first time he’s had a losing record as head coach since the middle of the 2010 season. UW has also lost nine of 14 games since the 5-1 start to the 2011 season.

I’ll have lots of reaction later.

UW TURNS IT OVER AGAIN — UW had a nice drive going to the Arizona 6 when a third down Price pass into the end zone was a little behind Cody Bruns and picked off by Arizona. Price with two interceptions and a fumble and 10 turnovers in the last three games.

NOW 45-17 — Richard Morrison ran back a punt 63 yards for a TD to make it 45-17. UW, though, on the move as I type this to the Arizona 21, though they obviously need lots of quick points now. If you’re looking for a bright side, Arizona has had trouble closing out games this season — its offensive style obviously lends to lots of possessions for the other team.

ARIZONA UP 38-17 — Huskies had a chance to get really back into it following a Carey fumble on the first play. But Price fumbled it back on the next play and Arizona drove for a score and now leads 38-17.

HALFTIME THOUGHTS — It’s 31-17 Arizona, but if possible it’s UW that has the momentum following the swing of events at the end of the half. Arizona will get the ball first so we’ll see if UW finds some answers on defense.

Sarkisian said in his radio comments that UW has to get more pressure on the quarterback and also has to do a better job stopping first down runs to put Arizona in obvious passing situations.

He said he thought the offense was working well other than some breakdowns in protection and to expect UW to stick with its no-huddle package in the second half.

Arizona has 339 yards on 45 plays and UW 247 on 46 in the first half. Price is 14-27 for 152, Scott 10-17 for 217. Carey has 109 yards on 22 carries and Sankey has 50 on 12.

HUGE TURNABOUT FOR HUSKIES — Almost hard to explain all that, but UW is back in the game after Josh Shirley hit Matt Scott as he threw and Feeney picked it off and returned it to the 3. Sankey ran it in two plays later to make it 31-17 with 13 seconds left in the half instead of Arizona possibly adding to the lead. Huge momentum swing for the Huskies.

Arizona looked like it might be able to add to the lead after getting a first down on an offsides penalty when it appeared the Cats were going to punt.

ARIZONA A QUICK RESPONSE — Crazy pace here and Arizona has added another TD on a Scott pass of 53 yards to Austin Scott. Arizona up 31-10 with 2:37 left in half. Matt Scott is 10-15 for more than 200 yards.

HUSKIES A QUICK ANSWER — UW got a really quick answer, going to a no huddle and moving 75 yards in five plays in 1:02 to make it 24-10. The TD came on a 6-yard pass from Price to ASJ to make it 24-10. 3:41 left in the half.

ARIZONA NOW UP 24-3 — Arizona took the ball from its own 38 following a UW three ando out and used two fourth down conversions to move 62 yards and break ahead 24-3 with 4:43 left. The TD came on a 33-yard pass from Scott to Garic Wharton on a fourth and three play. Obviously UW up against it now, down 21 and so far showing no ability to stop the Wildcats. But UW has moved the ball and really needs to do so now.

ARIZONA EXTENDS LEAD — UW drove to the Arizona 20 on its drive that began on last play of second quarter. But a sack moved it back and on third down Price was hit and his ball fluttered into an interception by Bondurant returned to the UW 41. Taimi Tutogi hit Price as he threw.

Arizona methodically moved 41 yards in 11 plays to score a TD on a 1-yard run by QB Matt Scott to make it 17-3 with 8:19 left in the half.

END FIRST QUARTER — Arizona leads 10-3 and has 151 yards. UW has 112 and now has the ball at its own 36 with a first down.

ARIZONA LEADS 10-3 — Arizona gets a John Bonano field goal good from 24. Arizona leads 10-3 with 6 seconds left in first quarter. Drive was 10 plays, 81 yards in 2:55. Big play was a 43-yard pass from Scott to Buckner on third and 15. UW did well to avoid a TD there.

ARIZONA ON BOARD — Arizona does indeed move fast and the Cats needed just 1:55 to move 75 yards in seven plays, the TD coming on a pass from Matt Scott to David Richards of 27 yards. Looked like Marcus Peters got beat there.

HUSKIES ON BOARD — UW is on the board with a 43-yard field goal by Travis Coons at the 9:49 mark following a 14-play, 65-yard drive. Price hit his first five passes for 46 yards and converted a fourth and three at the Arizona 33. But the drive stalled on incomplete passes to or near the end zone to ASJ and Kasen Williams.

RIVA, THOMPSON IN UNIFORM — And it looks like each may start — Riva at RT and Thompson at nickel/LB, etc. Each went through warmups with the starting units, from what I could tell.

TRAVEL ROSTER UPDATE — UW was able to bring 70 players on the trip. A couple not here who are not redshirting are Corey Waller and Evan Zeger.

A few guys who are thought redshirting are here, likely just to have the experience and be available in case of extreme emergency, such as FB Psalm Wooching and OLs Nathan Dean and Jake Eldrenkamp. Otherwise, it’s pretty much what you would expect.

We’ll get going around 5:30 p.m. …
