A time has indeed been announced today for UW’s game Saturday at home against Utah, and it may not be one everyone likes — it’s another 7:30 p.m. start on the Pac-12 Networks.
Here is the official announcement from the school.
I’ve already gotten some e-mails from people complaining about all the night games. One thing to keep in mind is that these are the decisions of the conference and the network, and all part of the 12-year, $3 billion TV deal that took effect this season. Essentially, the schools signed over the decisions on gametimes and agreed to play more games at night and on non-Saturdays to fulfill the TV contracts — which are bringing each school a lot more money ($15-20 million or so more per year — it grows throughout the life of the contract).
But no doubt, UW has been as impacted as any school this year as this will be the eighth night game (6 p.m. start or later local time) for the Huskies this year.
The Utah game is the last home game for the Huskies, and this means all but one will have started after 4 p.m. and four after 6 p.m.
UW has had just one Saturday afternoon home game this year, that coming against Portland State.
UW has two games remaining after this weekend — next Saturday at Colorado and then Nov. 23 at WSU for the Apple Cup. There is no time yet for the Colorado game, but that could come tomorrow. The WSU game will begin at 12:30 p.m., a nice traditional time if not for the fact that the game is being played in Pullman on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
As someone who has to make a lot of last-minute travel plans myself to get to and from these games, I sympathize with those of you who don’t love this. I guess at least you can take some solace that fans of every other school can relate — WSU’s home game with UCLA this Saturday is also a 7:30 p.m start, for instance.
This is also UW’s fourth game this season on the Pac-12 Networks, which remains in stalemate with DirecTV — so those of you with DirecTV (or the couple others that also remains holdouts on this) will again have to search for options to watch the game.
