Darrell Royal passes away at 88

Longtime Texas coach Darrell Royal died this morning at the age of 88.

And while Texas is rightly his legacy, I pass it along on here because Royal was also a coach of the Huskies for one season, in 1956, taking over for John Cherberg, who was fired after going 10-18-2 in three seasons.

Royal led the Huskies to a 5-5 record before leaving for Texas. He was replaced by a teammate at Oklahoma, Jim Owens, who then revived the UW program, leading the Huskies to Rose Bowls in 1959 and 1960.

Royal obviously wasn’t around long to have a real mark at Washington other than helping to set a little bit of a foundation that Owens (with whom he had known and who had a similar style) built on. His main legacy may be that he remains the last UW coach to leave voluntarily for another job.
