A reader asked this week that I detail the freshmen class and who is playing and who isn’t.
That’s a good idea, especially now that we are past the point that any of the guys sitting out are going to play (barring simply massive injuries at one spot or something).
So first, here is a look at scholarship true freshmen playing this season:
P Korey Durkee — Punted in the first three games before Travis Coons took over duties.
LB/DE Cory Littleton — Has started two games and has 11 tackles in five games.
WR Jaydon Mickens — Has played in every game and has 16 catches for 113 yards and also has 13 kickoff returns for 307 yards.
RB Kendyl Taylor — Moved from WR to RB, he is now the team’s third-leading rusher with 122 yards on 22 carries and also the fifth-leading receiver with 11 catches for 69 yards.
S Shaq Thompson — Thompson, pictured in a Getty Images photo, is tied for third on the team in tackles with 51 and the leader in tackles-for-a-loss with 6.5.
RB Erich Wilson II — Has played in five games and is the second-leading rusher with 140 on 25 attempts.
DE Pio Vatuvei — Has played in every game and has seven tackles.
OL Shane Brostek — Started the Stanford, Oregon and USC games at right guard.
WR Marvin Hall — A member of the Class of 2011 technically, but is a true freshman after grayshirting, and has played in six games with two catches for 21 yards and also has six punt returns for 33 yards and is the team’s leader in kickoff returns with 16 for 357.
UW also has a 10th true freshman playing this season in walk-on Ryan Masel, who is handling all long snaps.
So that means 14 true freshmen are not playing this season and are redshirting. They are: CB Brandon Beaver, OL Nathan Dean, OL Jake Eldrenkamp, OL Cory Fuavai, OL Taylor Hindy, QB Jeff Lindquist, QB Cyler Miles, LB Blake Rodgers, DT Damion Turpin, CB Cleveland Wallace, WR Darien Washington, WR Dwayne Washington, FB Psalm Wooching, RB Ryan McDaniel.
At this point in the season, the true frosh redshirting generally are working on the scout team. A few have made some trips, notably Miles, who has gone on all of them.
