The Huskies are off the field following their Tuesday morning practice. With the weather a little inclement here — and expecting balmy temperatures in Colorado this weekend — the Huskies went inside, to the Dempsey Indoor.
And as UW coach Steve Sarkisian said would happen, with the season winding down and wanting to keep players fresh, practice was also a few minutes shorter than has been usual for a Tuesday.
This is the day we get to talk to defensive players and coaches, so that might defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox. Below I also have some video of Shaq Thompson.
Wilcox talked about his assessment of the Utah game, saying: “I thought we played hard and competed. We missed some run fits that hurt us and we missed some tackles that hurt us so those things kept drives alive. We had a big penalty that hurt us. On the positive side, again I thought we played with really good effort and competed hard. I thought we made some plays on the ball in the back end which was good to see. I thought our eye discipline in our secondary was as good as it’s been in terms of looking at the right things and not guessing. Obviously our offense did a great job too, I thought. It was a team win. But there is plenty to clean up from the tape as there always is.”
As for some of the creative lineups on the defensive line, he said: “There were some good things, obviously playing a couple new people in there. Had Cory Littleton using him in some pass rush, obviously Austin (Seferian-Jenkins). We’re trying to get some ways to generate some four-man pass rush because it allows you to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hands a little quicker and there were some good things that showed up. Josh Shirley had a couple nice rushes. Huddy (Andrew Hudson) had a couple nice rushes and played with phenomenal effort and out-hustled some people to make some plays on the quarterback. I thought those guys did a decent job coming in, some new guys in the mix there.”
Here is video of Wilcox (in which he also talks about this week’s game with Colorado) and below that, Thompson, who talks about what position he may play in the future, adjusting to a new position this year, and more:
