Colorado game thread

UW WINS — Huskies get the win here to improve to 7-4 and win their fourth straight — the win total ties that of the last two seasons with two games left, the Apple Cup next Friday and then a bowl game.

PRICE TIES SCHOOL RECORD — Colorado is the Pac-12’s get well card and Keith Price is certainly feeling good now, tying the UW school record with his fifth TD pass, this one of 15 yards to Jaydon Mickens to make it 38-3 with 5:01 left.

The others to throw for five TDs in a game were Jake Locker against Oregon State in 2010 and Chris Rowland against Cal in 1973. Price threw for four TDs last year four times.

HUSKIES NOW UP 31-3 — Another easy scoring drive for UW and the Huskies have this one in hand, leading 31-3 with 9:24 left. This one concluded in what might have been the best offensive play of the day as Price threw as he was being hit and lofted a 3-yard TD pass to a wide open Seferian-Jenkins.

Price has 4 TDs on the day.

END OF THIRD QUARTER — UW is up 24-3 and comfortably in control.

UW UP 24-3 — Coons hit a 25-yard field goal to make it 24-3 with 1:07 left in the third. 11 plays, 68 yards. UW had to overcome some penalties to get it that far. Price had the key play with a flip out of pressure to Sankey to pick up a third-and-19.

BUFFS ON BOARD — Whoops, forgot to update that CU got a field goal to make it 21-3 midway through the third. But UW again driving.

HUSKIES BLOWING IT OPEN NOW — UW is now up 21-0 with 9:22 to play in the third quarter, scoring on a 23-yard pass from Price to Kendyl Taylor. UW got the ball at the 23 when Josh Shirley stripped it out of the hands of Webb and Austin Seferian-Jenkins recovered. Two plays later, Price hit Taylor on a checkdown and he followed some good blocking into the end zone.

UW NOW UP 14-0 — Crazy sequence helps UW take a 14-0 lead. Huskies were forced to punt on their first drive but a Coons punt hit a Colorado player in the shoulder. The ball was heading out of bounds when Kevin Smith raced over and tossed it back in and after a scramble, Will Shamburger recovered at the 35.

Three plays later, Price hit Williams for an 18-yard TD. 14-0 UW with 12:01 to play in third Q.

STATS — UW had 190 yards at the half and Price was 11-14 for 118 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.

Sankey has 83 yards on 15 carries. Williams the leading receiver with 37 yards on three receptions. Feeney the leading tackler with five, Sean Parker has four and Timu and Glenn three.

UW UP 7-0 AT HALF — The Huskies are up 7-0 at halftime and will get the ball first to start the second half.

Sarkisian was not happy in his halftime radio comments, specifically about the offense.

He said the offense “has to get out of our own way. It’s ridiculous.”

He said of Price that he “has to trust his reads, his progressions, trust the system that has withstood the test of time.”

He said Sankey fumbled because he had the ball in the wrong arm and that the team has to go back to remembering all the little things it has worked on in practice the last few weeks.

He said the defense is “playing great” stopping first downs, playing sticky on third downs and creating turnovers.

Colorado has 75 yards and has not crossed midfield.

HUSKIES TAKE LEAD — It took a while, but UW finally got on the board with a 3-yard pass from Price to Cody Bruns — the first touchdown for Cody Bruns. A 25-yard pass to Williams helped set up the score, as did a 7-yard run on fourth-and-inches by Sankey.

UW went 65 yards in 10 plays in 4:54 and leads 7-0 with 1:02 left in the half.

CU PUNTS — UW will start at its own 35 following punt with 5:56 to play in second, still no score.

STILL NO SCORE —- Holding penalty and sack kill drive and UW will punt. Coons drops snap but escapes tackle and gets punt away. CU will start at 21 with 8:21 to play in second quarter and still no score.

SLOPPY GAME —- More sloppiness on both sides. Sankey fumbled the ball away at the CU 2 to end that UW drive. CU got one first down and then on third down Webb threw into double coverage and Parker picked it off at the 49. Still no score early in the second quarter.

FIRST QUARTER STATS — UW had 14 plays for 67 yards, CU had 14 for 34. UW 39 rushing on 7 carries, CU 23 on nine.

END OF FIRST QUARTER — The first quarter is over, and it was a sloppy one that ends 0-0. But UW has the ball at the CU 31 following Colorado’s odd decision to go for it and try to run the same play for about the seventh straight time. UW stopped a Powell run for no gain and took over at the 41 and a Sankey run took it to the 31 where the Huskies have a first down.

UW MISSES FIELD GOAL — UW got the ball on a Shaq Thompson interception and two first downs and a personal foul on CU took the ball to the 13. But a run and two incomplete passes — one to a wide open ASJ in the end zone — killed the drive and then Coons missed a 31-yard field goal when it hit the left upright.

NO FIRST DOWNS — Still no first downs for either team after four possessions. UW was again hurt by a penalty, this one an offensive pass interference by Kasen Williams that negated his catch to the 22. UW went for it on fourth-and-eight at the 37 but a pass to Williams down the sideline was low and he couldn’t control it.

TWO THREE-AND-OUTS — Each team went three and out on first drives. UW had two runs for no gain and then a personal foul on Mickens for hitting a CU defender after the play to set up a third-and-long, that the Huskies didn’t get. CU will take over at its own 10 with 11:13 to play in first quarter.

COIN TOSS — Colorado wins toss and will receive.

WEATHER REPORT — Mostly sunny and 57 degrees as we near kickoff.

CONNOR WOOD STARTING AT QB FOR CU — Connor Wood is starting at QB for Colorado today. He has played just six games this year, going 18-36 for 254 yards. He’s a sophomore transfer from Texas. CU has benched Jordan Webb, who started most of the year, including the WSU game that it won, and Nick Hirschman, who started last week, is out with a concussion.

NOBODY HERE — About 15 minutes to kickoff and there is nobody here. Game has a high school feel to here. Will surely be a really small crowd.

STEVENSON AT TB? — One interesting sight during warmups is Taz Stevenson taking some plays at tailback. Could be a depth thing with Dezden Petty out, Wilson having been ailing.

TRAVEL ROSTER NOTES —- We have received the travel roster and no huge surprises. One redshirting true frosh here today is cornerback Cleveland Wallace. I’m sure the plan is not to play him, but he may here just in case with Trufant out.

Erich Wilson, who was not in pads last week, is here and in pads today.

TRUFANT NOT IN UNIFORM — As I type this with about an hour to go to the game, some of the Huskies are out on the field. And we can see that Desmond Trufant is NOT in uniform — he’s here but not in pads. So he won’t be playing today.
