Bowl update

A couple of quick things to pass along on UW’s bowl situation. …

Dan Hanneke, the executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl, said today he thinks UW, Arizona and Arizona State will be the Pac-12 teams available to their bowl after the other Pac-12 bowls ahead of them have picked teams, and that the two Mountain West teams the bowl will pick from are Boise State and Fresno State. The Vegas Bowl, however, had a matchup last year of Arizona State and Boise State and that would likely be avoided, meaning the Vegas Bowl may ultimately be choosing either UW or Arizona as its Pac-12 team.

— Hanneke said the bowl won’t be able to make its choice until after the Boise State-Nevada game on Saturday. That game is at 12:30 p.m. A Boise State win would mean the Vegas bowl would likely take the Broncos, but there also remains an outside shot of BSU working its way into the BCS (here’s a breakdown of that). The Vegas bowl seems almost certain to pick Boise State, but won’t be able to do that until after the results of next weekend. And it will want to keep its Pac-12 options open until it knows for sure which MWC team it will get.

— Hanneke said the bowl is not concerned about pitting UW and Boise State when the two teams will also open the 2013 season against each other in Seattle. “I think both teams would love to do that and kind of start that rivalry, so to speak,” he said. “I don’t see any negatives to that.”
