The official announcement of the UW-Boise State Las Vegas Bowl remains a few hours away — a Vegas Bowl official just said they had nothing official yet to announce and won’t until later this afternoon.
But as we’ve been reporting for days, UW-Boise State is the matchup that is expected. A last step in the process came in the last hour as Fresno State was reportedly invited to the Hawaii Bowl, leaving Boise State for the Vegas. Boise State’s last apparent hope at a BCS bowl was extinguished when Northern Illinois was invited to the Orange Bowl.
I probably should have linked this earlier, but here’s my story from today’s paper looking at the probable game with Boise State.
As noted there, UW and Boise State have played just once, a 24-10 Husky win in 2007 in Seattle against what was then a No. 22-ranked Bronco squad. That was also Jake Locker’s first home game as UW’s QB. Here’s my story on that game.
What will obviously be the subplot to the bowl is the pending series between UW and Boise State. Boise State will come to Seattle to play the first game in the renovated Husky Stadium next Aug. 31 and then a return game at Boise on Sept.. 19, 2015 (not 2014 as is commonly assumed, so it would be three games in four seasons, not three straight seasons).
And it looks like Arizona State is headed to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl to play Navy and Arizona to the New Mexico Bowl to play Nevada.
If so, that makes Arizona the big loser of the last weekend of Pac-12 play. Arizona blew a late lead to fall at home to Arizona State and fall into a four-way tie at 7-5 with USC, UW, ASU and Arizona. If Arizona had won and finished 8-4, it might have gone to the Sun and certainly would have gone to the Vegas. Instead, it looks like it be the last team picked of the four 7-5 teams and will have the quick turnaround to Las Vegas and also some conflicts with its basketball team (which hosts Florida that day) that won’t help its attendance.
Here are a few links in the interim. …
— The Idaho Statesman will be the best place to check for Boise State news during the game.
— UW QB commit Troy Williams helped lead Narbonne to the LA City Section Division-I title last night.
— Idaho has hired former Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino as its new head coach. Former UW defensive coordinator Nick Holt was on the Arkansas staff this year as a recruiting coordinator and has a long association with the Petrino family, and just putting two and two together, it might not be a surprise to see Holt back at Idaho in some capacity, though that’s just me guessing on that.
— CoachingSearch.com has lots of updates on its daily ticker. But I don’t see any UW coaches mentioned anywhere.
