Sorry to be late getting more post-game stuff up. I have to admit, Las Vegas beckoned one last time.
Also, there’s now a lot of time to chew over the season that was, and it may be better to do it when cooler heads prevail.
But no doubt, a disappointing ending to the 2012 season with UW finishing at 7-6, the same record as the last two years. As we’ve discussed here often, next year is expected to be the breakthrough season. The ending to this season puts even a little more urgency on that now.
If there’s a positive in today, it’s the way the team rallied from an 18-3 second-quarter deficit. This isn’t the best Boise State team of the last few years. But it still felt like the game was in danger of really getting away at that point. That it didn’t says something.
Still, UW sort of again let it get away at the end with the kind of incomplete play that defined the season — bad kickoff coverage, a missed field goal and one-too-many turnovers, to name a few culprits. And what seems to me sort of lost in all of the comments I’m getting is the play of the defense, especially the secondary. This is far from the best Boise State passing attack of recent years. But UW allowed 27-39 passing for 298 yards and three touchdowns, all a little-too-reminiscent of the way the WSU game went, as well. UW ranked highly all season in pass defense. But those who wondered if the opponents had something to do with that got some ammo with the play of the last two games. And the secondary is one spot where graduation hits a little with Desmond Trufant and Justin Glenn departing. But as I said, lots of time now to digest the season, and I’ll do that in the coming weeks on the blog.
I had a few thoughts on the game afterward that you can listen to in the video below from Cinesport.
And here’s the instant analysis from the ESPN Pac-12 blog.
Also, in one recruiting note, Mason Kelley of ESPN’s HuskyNation has the news tonight that LB Danny Mattingly has committed to Oregon. Mattingly was one of the top uncommitted prospects left in the state and had recently taken a visit to UW.
Now here’s the video with some thoughts on today’s game:
