The Atlanta Falcons open the preseason at 5 p.m. today on ESPN against the Cincinnati Bengals, and former Husky Desmond Trufant is expected to start at one corner in his NFL debut.
Trufant, the Falcons’ first-round pick, has been battling fellow rookie Robert Alford for the starting job and today will certainly be a big test for both.
Trufant and Alford have been taking their lumps from Roddy White and Julio Jones in practices, so it might be refreshing to go against some other receivers. (A.J.) Green and (Mohamed) Sanu will provide a good test on how quickly Trufant and Alford are progressing.
Trufant has stayed in touch with his former UW teammates, as Percy Allen writes for today’s paper. Trufant sent a text message to Marcus Peters and many others in the UW defensive secondary before the start of Huskies’ camp on Monday, and the tone Trufant set for the unit in recent years still resonates.
So far, senior Greg Ducre is holding down the second cornerback spot opposite Peters in the No. 1 defense, with junior transfer Travell Dixon and redshirt freshman Cleveland Wallace are also in the mix.
