Sarkisian on Don James: ‘I know he’s fighting’

Legendary UW coach Don James was scheduled to begin chemotherapy treatment today for a malignant tumor on his pancreas, and current coach Steve Sarkisian said the team was pulling for James as he continues to fight the disease.

“Coach James set the standard for this program and for all of us,” Sarkisian said. “It’s the reason you guys are all sitting here, it’s the reason I’m here. Husky football and what it all stands for is what he created. I was so happy that he was able to come to the first game against Boise in the opening of new Husky Stadium because if anybody deserved to be in that building that night, it was him.

“I’ve grown to get close to Coach James and Carol; I spoke to Carol Friday night before the game from my hotel room, just to check in on Coach and will continue to do so. I know that he got a chance to watch the game on television on Saturday, so we’re pulling for him. I know he’s fighting and we’re praying for him. The treatment he’s going through, it’s a battle because it’s going up against a tough one, but Coach James, he’s going to fight it for sure.”
