Chris Petersen picks up his first recruit for UW

Just a few hours after he was offered a scholarship by Washington, defensive back Darren Gardenhire of Lakewood, Calif., made a verbal commitment to the Huskies on Monday morning, becoming the first recruit to commit to Chris Petersen at UW.

Gardenhire had been committed to Washington State. He is the cousin of UW running back Dwayne Washington.

“Coach Pete was on the practice field and he was fired up (when I told him),” Gardenhire told 247sports.com. “I’m a Husky — this is it.”
