Morning links: UW defense grades out well in advanced statistics

— UW new assistant coaches met the press on Tuesday, and their task now is to salvage this recruiting class.

Chris Petersen wanted to put “the band back together,” and he did.

The new coaches are settling in on Montlake.

— The Huskies finished 2013 ranked No. 4 in the nation in pass defense, according to the Football Outsiders’ advanced statistical analysis. The UW defense was 20th overall, and the UW offense was ranked 36th.

— Tight end Xavier Grimble becomes the fifth USC player to leave early for the NFL.

USC completes its coaching staff by hiring former Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis.

— Moving to Louisville wouldn’t be a step up for Arizona’s Rich Rodriguez.

Bud Withers on Washington State’s 25-point finish at No. 1 Arizona last week.

— Washington State ended a 36-game losing skid to the Huskies on Tuesday night in women’s basketball.
