UW kicks off another important recruiting weekend

First, if you missed it this morning, check out this nice read from Bob Condotta on former UW receiver Jermaine Kearse, whose knack for big plays for the Seahawks are nothing new.

Late last night, I caught up with the latest recruit to commit to the Huskies, receiver Dante Pettis out of Junipero Serra Catholic High in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Pettis was one of about 15 recruits who visited UW last weekend, seven of whom have made a verbal commitment to the Huskies this week.

Pettis said he had settled on UW earlier in the week, and that his announcement Thursday “was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”

Pettis’ father is Gary Pettis, the third-base coach for the Texas Rangers, and Dante’s uncle is longtime Mariners scout Stacey Pettis. Further, Dante’s cousin is former Boise State receiver Austin Pettis, now with the St. Louis Rams, and Dante said he spoke to his cousin about twice per week during his recruiting process.

“(Austin) was definitely one of my biggest mentors throughout this process,” Dante Pettis said. “He told me a lot about Chris Petersen and how great he was, and how great (receivers coach Brent) Pease was, too.”

Pettis said he was impressed last weekend during his UW visit by a slideshow presentation Petersen made to the recruits.

“I had heard things about how intent he was on people doing the right thing, and on the visit we really saw that,” Pettis said. “He made this presentation about building character and making sure we have good grades. A lot of it wasn’t even about football. I thought that was cool, that he cared about us off the field that much.”

For the record, Pettis said he now stands 6-feet-2 and weighs 175 pounds. He also plans to participate in track and field for J Serra again this spring.
