NCAA president Mark Emmert takes stand in O’Bannon anti-trust trial

In what could be a historic day for the future of college athletics, NCAA president Mark Emmert, the UW alum and former UW president, has taken the stand this morning in the Ed O’Bannon v. NCAA anti-trust trial in Oakland.

“It’s a great opportunity for the N.C.A.A. to tell its story and make the argument that people have been making in the media and speculating about for, gosh, five years,” Emmert told The New York Times. “It’s good to move from debate and discussion to finally saying, ‘O.K. these are important questions of law and let’s settle them where they should be settled.’ ”

O’Bannon, the former UCLA basketball player, and other plaintiffs are trying to secure rights to their names and likenesses that would allow them to profit from college sports broadcasts. Emmert will try to convince a federal judge that the NCAA does promote amateurism and is not anti-competitive.
