The following is a letter from former Huskies assistant coach Skip Hall, who remembers Abner Thomas, a longtime UW athletic department special assistant and a mentor to many student-athletes. Thomas died Sunday at age 86.
The year was 1975 and coach Don James and 4 assistants flew through the night to Seattle to begin the Don James Era of Husky football. I was one of those assistants along with Bob Stull (the current athletic director at UTEP) — who along with Coach James, Dick Scesniak and Ray Dorr, who have since passed on — met a big man with a big smile and a big heart for Husky football.
Abner Thomas became a fast and loyal friend.
Together we recruited many great players that helped the Husky program soar to new heights. I will have much more to share at his memorial service on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. on the UW campus.
Abner was a mentor, inspiration and friend to so many — we will all miss him!
Coach Skip Hall
