Freshman Budda Baker, the former Bellevue High star, is listed as a starter at one safety position in Washington’s Week 1 depth chart released today.

The 5-foot-10, 173-pound Baker is also listed second to John Ross on kickoff returns for the Huskies’ opener Saturday at Hawaii.

The defensive secondary, needing to replace three graduated starters, is one of UW’s biggest question marks entering the 2014 season. Sophomore Brandon Beaver is listed as the other starting safety, with sophomore Trevor Walker as his backup, and redshirt freshman Jermaine Kelly has, for now at least, held off freshman Naijiel Hale at cornerback.

A few other notable developments on the depth chart:

  • Junior Marvin Hall and senior DiAndre Campbell are listed as starting receivers, ahead of senior Kasen Williams (who is returning from a major leg injury) and ahead of Ross (who seems poised for a breakthrough season).
  • Senior Colin Tanigawa is indeed listed as the starter at center, after having played only guard in his career, ahead of 2013 starting center Mike Criste.
  • Redshirt freshman Keishawn Bierria “or” junior Travis Feeney will start at outside linebacker.
  • Eight true freshmen are listed on the depth chart: Baker, Hale, DE Will Dissly, NT Greg Gaines, CB Sidney Jones, WR Brayden Lenius, WR Dante Pettis and PK/P Tristan Vizcaino.
  • Junior linebacker Cory Littleton, a starter in 2013 coming off an offseason injury, is not listed on the depth chart.
