First look: Eastern Washington Eagles

Coaching record: 58-22 in seventh season at EWU.

Record: The Eagles are 2-0 after Saturday’s 41-9 victory over Montana Western.

Rankings: The Huskies were No. 25 in the AP preseason poll (the new poll comes out Tuesday this week); EWU is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Football Championship Subdivision poll.

Star players: EWU quarterback Vernon Adams passed for 411 yards and rushed for 107, including winning touchdown with 18 seconds left to lead the Eagles to an 49-46 upset of then-No. 25 Oregon State in Corvallis last season — one of several recent upsets by FCS teams over major-college programs. Adams is 22-4 as the Eagles starter. He has a nine-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ration this season, and he completed 28 of 31 passes for 370 yards and five touchdowns in less than three quarters on Saturday. “We couldn’t get that done on air,” UW coach Chris Petersen said Monday. …. Sophomore receiver Cooper Kupp won the Jerry Rice Award last year as top freshman in the FCS. Kupp, the grandson of former UW offensive lineman Jake Kupp (1961-63), had  85 receptions, 1,567 receiving yards and 21 TDs last season. … Cory Mitchell (17 catches) and Shaq Hill (19.3 yards per catch) lead EWU in receptions this season. Sophomore Kendrick Bourne had eight receptions in two games, four of which have gone for a touchdown. … Quincy Forte has 23 carries for 153 yards in two games, and Jalen Moore as 18 carries for 11 yards and two TDs. … Senior Tevin McDonald, dismissed from UCLA by Bruins coach Jim Mora in 2013, is a starting safety for EWU.

By the numbers:

611.0 — Average yards per game this season for EWU, which ranks fourth in the FCS.

84 — Career touchdowns for Adams, tied for the second-most in EWU history.

3 — Number of transfers from Washington State on the Eagles roster, all listed as starters this week: receiver Blair Bomber, right tackle Jake Rodgers and defensive end Zackary Johnson.
