Player of the game

Washington linebacker Shaq Thompson did it all Saturday, scoring two defensive touchdowns, on a 36-yard interception return and a 52-yard fumble recovery. At one point in the first half, he had gained more yards and scored more points than the Illinois offense. Thompson also rushed for 16 yards on three carries.

Play of the game

Huskies quarterback Cyler Miles connected with receiver John Ross III on a 75-yard pass play with 5:34 left in the first quarter that put UW ahead 14-3. The play was reminiscent of the 91-yard touchdown reception Ross had against Hawaii in the season opener.

Turning point

Washington had just allowed a safety to make it 28-5, and Illinois had the ball back early in the second quarter. But Andrew Hudson sacked Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt and forced a fumble, which Thompson scooped up and ran back 52 yards for a touchdown. It put Washington ahead 35-5 with 10:33 left in the first half.

By the numbers

1 — Third down converted by Illinois out of 11 chances. Washington was 8 of 16 on third down.

279 — Net yards passing by Illinois. The Illini had been averaging 370.5 passing yards per game.
