Washington sophomore Joe Mathis, a backup defensive lineman, returned to practiced Monday and could play for the Huskies in their Pac-12 opener against No. 16 Stanford on Saturday (1:15 p.m., FOX).
Mathis will have to earn his place back in the defensive-line rotation.
“We’ll just wait and see how he practices and all that,” UW defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkoswki said. “He’s back and rollin’.”
Mathis was away from the team for more than a week, missing both the Illinois and Georgia State games while taking some “personal time,” UW coach Chris Petersen said. There was much speculation that Mathis was unsatisfied with his role on the team.
Mathis, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound sophomore from Ontario, Calif., played in 12 of 13 games for UW as a true freshman last year. He had two tackles in UW’s season-opening victory at Hawaii on Aug. 30. He projects as a potential starter for UW in 2015.
