Wacky, wacky weather: Strong winds and driving cold rain wreaked havoc at Husky Stadium, and made conditions miserable on the field. Neither team could pass the ball effectively. Washington quarterback Troy Williams completed 18 of 26 passes for 139 yards and two interceptions in his first career start. Meanwhile, Arizona State’s Taylor Kelly finished with 180 yards on 14-of-15 passing in his return after missing the past three games.
Shaq attack: Shaq Thompson switched from linebacker to running back and finished with a game-high 98 yards on 21 carries. The junior two-way phenom appeared on just one down for the defense. He spent most of the night on offense for Washington, which was without its top running backs Dwayne Washington and Lavon Coleman.
Defensive gaffes: Linebacker John Timu provided Washington with its only touchdown on a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Huskies also mustered a marvelous goal-line stand when they held Arizona State out of the end zone despite four plays at the 1. However, with the score tied 10-10 late in the fourth quarter, Washington surrendered a 75-yard touchdown drive. Defensive end Hau’oli Kikaha had his arms around Kelly before he released a pass into the end zone. ASU receiver Gary Chambers wiggled free from safety Budda Baker to haul in the 7-yard touchdown reception that gave the Sun Devils a 17-10 lead with 3:00 left.
