Washington senior buck linebacker Hau’oli Kikaha, senior nose tackle Danny Shelton and junior linebacker Shaq Thompson were named Tuesday night to the all-Pac-12 Conference first team, the first time the Huskies have more than two players on the first team since 2000.

Thompson is a double-honoree, earning first-team honors as an all-purpose/special teams player, too.

Kikaha, after missing most of the 2011 and 2012 seasons with major knee injuries, this season broke UW records for career sacks (35), single-single sacks (18) and single-season tackles for loss (24). He is also a finalist for two major national awards — the Butkus (top linebacker) and Lombardi (nation’s top linebacker or lineman).

Shelton is second on the team with 89 tackles this season — a remarkable number for someone who weighs 339 pounds and plays a position that draws regular double teams. Shelton, an Auburn High School product, also has nine sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss and four fumble recoveries this season.

Shelton and Kikaha on Monday were also named to the Pac-12’s all-academic first team.

Thompson scored four touchdowns on defense this season — three on fumble returns and one interception return — the most by a defensive player in college football in a decade, according to ESPN research. He also has 71 tackles and four fumble recovers. Injuries also forced Thompson to fill-in as UW’s featured running back this season, and he has rushed for 463 yards and two touchdowns, with an average of 7.5 yards per carry that ranks No. 1 in the Pac-12.

Seven other Huskies earned honorable mention: freshman safety Budda Baker (Bellevue), senior offensive tackle Micah Hatchie (Haleiwa, Hawai’i), senior defensive end Andrew Hudson (Redlands, Calif.), sophomore return specialist John Ross III (Long Beach, Calif.), senior center/guard Colin Tanigawa (Pasadena, Calif.), senior linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and sophomore kicker Cameron Van Winkle (Fall City).

The all-Pac-12 teams are voted on by the conference coaches.
