More injury news

While we were talking with Lorenzo Romar today about the Spencer Hawes injury, we also had a chance to talk about the other injured players.
Romar said Joel Smith is scheduled to have the boot on his foot removed tomorrow (Wednesday) and he will then be able to begin rehabilitation. Romar said he thinks there is a good chance Smith could be available for the opening game Nov. 12 against Pepperdine.
We also asked about Harvey Perry, and Romar said “I think we are out of the woods” in regards to Perry’s back. Romar said “he winces every once in a while” but hasn’t had to miss any time this fall due to the back.
Romar said again that Joe Wolfinger will be out for quite a while and possibly the season. “We won’t rush it,” he said.
Hans Gasser is doing well enough that he should be available for the start of practice Friday.
Finally, Romar called Brandon Burmeister’s foot injury “appears to be stress related” but that it’s still uncertain exactly what it is.
As for Hawes, Romar sounded pretty unconcerned from a long-term standpoint, saying “it’s a clean comeback as far as I’m concerned” and that he fully expects Hawes back for the Pepperdine game.
