Catching up on the polls

Time to catch up on the polls for this week.
First, here’s the AP poll, which has UW 14th. And the coaches poll, which has them 13th.
Here’s my ballot for the week.
1, UCLA
2, North Carolina
3, Duke
4, Wisconsin
5, Florida
6, Arizona
7, Ohio State
8, Alabama
9, Kansas
10, Connecticut
11, Oklahoma State
12, Pittsburgh
13, Washington
14, Butler
15, Texas A&M
16, Notre Dame
17, Oregon
18, Tennessee
19, Memphis
20, Wichita State
21, LSU
22, Marquette
23, Purdue
24, Nevada
25, Air Force
I listened to a Seattle sports talk host today say that it is “idiotic” that Gonzaga isn’t in the top 25. Guess that means I’m an idiot since I don’t have the Zags in there.
Gonzaga’s a tough call. The Zags are ranked No. 16 in the RPI this week and have played the fourth-toughest schedule in the nation. And obviously, we all saw them wallop the Huskies two weeks ago.
Conversly, Gonzaga has lost three of its last four games, two to teams ranked Nos. 51 (Washington State) and 114 (Georgia) in the RPI. This is the type of situation that raises the question of how to vote in these things — for what teams have accomplished recently, for the season, or for just how good you think teams are.
Everybody knows things change quickly in college basketball, that the team you beat by 20 points one week might beat you by 20 the next. I often try to go with a method of ranking them by who I’d pick to win if the teams played on a neutral court, all else being even.
Ultimately, I thought the Georgia and WSU losses were enough to move them just out of the poll for now. But if GU beats Nevada this week, they’ll almost certainly move back in.
