Gant qualifies

Darnell Gant said tonight that he has received a qualifying test score and will arrive at UW July 8 to officially begin his Husky career.
Gant, a 6-8 forward from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, admitted it was touch-and-go for a while on whether he would get a qualifying test score and is relieved it has worked out.
“I was really worried about it,” he said. “There was a lot of prayer and taking some time off from some other things, sacrificing a lot of other things. But I came out and got a good test score and I know where I want to be. Now I just need to concentrate on my academics and it will be all right.”
Gant said he is due to graduate from Crenshaw on June 20. He will come to UW in July to enroll in the freshman bridge program and work out informally with the team.
Gant said he averaged 22 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks this season for Crenshaw.
As for what he may do as a freshman this season for the Huskies, he said “I want to play but my playing time depends on how hard I’m willing to work and how much time I’m willing to put in the gym.”
The news on Gant means only Franklin High’s Venoy Overton remains unqualified among UW’s four incoming freshman for next season.
