Good assessment of Lute Olson’s situation

A few of you have have asked for my thoughts on the Lute Olson situation, and I haven’t really given any because I don’t really have any more insight than you do.
But I would say I agree with those who think his coaching days may be over, including Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, who offers a good breakdown of the situation here.
I was at Pac-10 media day, as well, and while I didn’t spend any time close to Olson to come away with the same view of him as Wilner did, I do remember being caught a little off-guard when Olson was talking about Kevin O’Neill and said this: “I was tired of holding the hammer myself, so now we both have the hammer.”
I thought right then that meant he was already grooming O’Neill to take over, which was the obvious assumption from the start but still seemed surprising to hear said quite so plainly by Olson himself.
If Olson is gone for good, no doubt it’s the end of what may be the most important and successful coaching tenure in Pac-10 basketball other than John Wooden. Judging by the way Arizona has played of late, it may also turn out to be about as seamless a transition as could have been possible for someone succeeding someone like Olson
