LSU pre-game

We’re about 40 minutes to tip-off here at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for today’s game, which you won’t be able to see on TV up there unless you have an expanded cable package or get it through ESPN Gameplane.
So I’ll try to provide a lot of in-game material here.
For my main story today I wrote about Ryan Appleby and his idolization of Maravich and how that influenced his baskektball career. I’ll let you read that for more on that topic.
As for a few other notes:
— Stayed at the team hotel this morning and the person playing the piano in the lobby was none other than UW forward Darnell Gant, who apparently counts that among his talents. One of his selections was the theme song from the Peanuts Christmas special.
— After explaining what I was doing here to the cab driver on my way over, the guy announced that “Mark Emmert was the best thing that ever happened to this place” referring to Emmert’s years as chancellor here. So yes, he appears to still be held in high esteem. The cabbie mentioned Emmert’s hiring of Nick Saban and also all of his leadership in the building of a number of new or renovated athletic facilities. Among those was the new home for the LSU mascot, Mike the Tiger. He’s housed in a $3 million habitat that is something like 15,000-square feet.
— Word is Appleby isn’t 100 percent but will get the start today. Then we’ll see how much he can go, and how well.
— One interesting stat today is that two LSU players — Anthony Randolph (33) and Chris Johnson (24) — have more blocked shots than the Huskies have as a team (23). LSU coach John Brady said the other day that the stat only means that the perimeter defense is letting too many opponents get into the paint. UW coach Lorenzo Romar, however, said it’s definitely something to worry about heading into this game. Randolph is 6-10, Johnson 6-11.
— As for the TV situation, here’s how I explained it last week.
More later when we start our running game thread.
