Husky Men's Basketball

The latest news and analysis on Husky men's hoops.

Gameday is here

Tipoff is about seven hours a way, but wanted to pass along a few links and notes:
— First, here’s our preview story of the game today as well as lineups and a breakdown of some matchups.
— Here’s some good stuff on the Cougars from the Spokesman-Review including the update on WSU’s injury situation. Sixth-man Daven Harmeling has been out for two weeks and remains out, and backup big man Caleb Forrest is questionable tonight, so WSU may have some depth issues up front.
— Here are a few quotes I couldn’t find room for in any story this week:
Tim Morris on the Cougars: “They are tough mentally. They don’t mess up. Tthey do everything right. When they get down, they come back together as team. They are really a group. When you have five guys working like that, it is hard to beat them.”
Lorenzo Romar on the matchup: “For us, it is as tough an opponent in the league for us when you look at our record over the last two, three years, we’ve had the least amount of success against Washington State. So it’s as tough an opponent as we could face in the Pac-10.
Romar on why the WSU defense is so successful: “In its most simple form, it’s hard to get shots around the basket uncontested when you play them. It would take a Tony Bennett clinic to break that down for you, but it’s just anything around the rim is difficult for you. You rarely see teams get uncontested shots against them, and then their offense is just as much a part of their defense as anything because they don’t let you get away from them. They don’t let the game get wide open and crazy. They kind of keep you in this little box.”
Justin Dentmon on why this year will be different playing WSU: “We are a better team, more focused team. We’ve got to go in with a mindset that we can’t let adversity take over, we have to take over adversity.”
Joel Smith on why UW has lost five in a row to WSU: “They were just more mentally tougher than us. They were older, we weren’t experienced, we were a little young. But we’ve come through a lot of those little phases and playing a lot better togetherr and we are jelling as well as they are, so we have just to have wait and see Saturday how it all works out.”
— Hope everyone realizes I’m trying just to have fun with my 4-0 start to my picks, realizing full well this may be the only time all year I have to crow. In fact, looks like I’m well on my way to being wrong about Arizona beating Oregon as the Ducks are up 16 as I type this. I should have known as Oregon is made to play up-tempo against man defense, which Arizona is letting the Ducks do right now. And now it’s Ducks by 19. Either a big win for the Ducks or an epic collapse.
— Some of you said my score seems a little high. I thought about that, but I remembered that WSU scored 75, 65 and 74 in three games against UW last year.
— And now Arizona is within 11 at the half. This will be a fun day. Talk to you later from the arena.
