USC game thread

LOOKS LIKE A LOSS — It’s 63-49 with 1:46 left and this looks like a loss, so I’ll stop the game thread here and come back with more later, possibly assunming in error that anyone wants to read it.
GETTING AWAY NOW — It’s 59-45 USC with 3:53 left and the Huskies appear headed to an 0-3 Pac-10 start. UW is shootinig 18-55 as I type this and while USC is one of the better defensive teams in the conference, UW also is simply not shooting well, missing all kinds of shots around the hoop. About the only thing uglier right now are the shoes of USC’s Daniel Hackett which look like a Warhol painting gone wrong.
LEAD DIDN’T LAST LONG — A foul, a missed shot and two turnovers has led to an 8-0 USC run and the Trojans are now ahead 50-43 with 7:35 to play. UW is 17-47 shooting and offense has to be more than a concern right now considering the Huskies shot 42.7 percent in the first two Pac-10 games.
HUSKIES TAKE FIRST LEAD — With O.J. Mayo out for a minute or two, UW shifted to a zone and finally was able to take the lead on a three-pointer by Joel Smith, whose playing one of his better games of late when you throw in his defense on Mayo. It’s 41-40 UW with 10:55 left.
MBA PLAYING WELL — Matthew Bryan-Amaning had a game-high six rebounds in the first half and now has scored four straight points to pull UW within 38-37 in what is shaping up as maybe his best game.
APPLEBY AGAIN STRUGGLING — Ryan Appleby has now gone three straight halves without scoring and is out of the game right now having missed all four of his shots for the game.
EYE ON PONDEXTER — Pondexter has been one of the best players on the floor in the first half with eight points and four rebounds in 13 minutes and the Huskies will need more of that in the second half.
USC UP 29-23 AT HALFTIME — USC is honoring former Trojan player Jim Marsh at halftime. You might know him better as the coach of the Seattle AAU team Friends of Hoop, a team for which guys like Jon Brockman and Spencer Hawes have played.
After looking like they were going to fall out of this one early, UW has come back and this is up for grabs. UW is shooting just 9-30 but has a 19-12 rebounding edge which is keeping them in the game. Smith and Tim Morris are also doing a good job on Mayo who is 0-6 with just one point.
HUSKIES HANGING IN — After falling down 16-5, the Huskies have come back to within 18-16 led by eight points by Quincy Pondexter, who has hit two straight three-pointers. And Joel Smith is doing a good job defensively on O.J. Mayo, holding him scoreless through the first 12:29 of the game.
OVERTON FOR DENTMON — We’ll start it here with the news that the Huskies are again shaking up the lineup with Venoy Overton starting in place of Justin Dentmon, as we had speculated might happen.
