Husky Men's Basketball

The latest news and analysis on Husky men's hoops.

January 13, 2008 at 10:18 AM

The day after

I focused on the suddenly stagnant offense for my game story today on the loss of USC. I was thinking these last few games might have been ones where the Huskies could have really used a guy like Phil Nelson, or maybe Lorrenzo Wade — remember when he briefly committed to play for UW following the 2005 season?
My notebook included a lead item on the good defensive job the Huskies did on O.J. Mayo much of the day along with Tim Morris’ assertion that Mayo is 6-4, at best. There’s also news on the latest lineup change and the good performance of Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who appears ready to begin making more of an impact on a regular basis.
For some views from the other side: Here’s the story from the LA Times and the LA Daily News. A lot of talk in both stories about the urgency the Trojans felt not to fall to 0-4 in conference play before facing UCLA this week.
ELSEWHERE AROUND THE PAC-10:
— Oregon State had another horrid shooting day in losing to Cal at home an ineptness that right now is keeping UW out of the Pac-10 cellar.
I also covered the UCLA-WSU game as the Bruins showed that for now, they are the undisputed class of the Pac-10. Kevin Love was really, really good against the Cougars and if he can do that all season, the Bruins are definite national title-contending material.
— Arizona got a big win at Houston as Jerryd Bayless showed just how valuable he is, scoring 33 points with nine assists in his first game back after missing four games with a knee injury.
TODAY’S PICK:
STANFORD AT OREGON: An especially intriguing matchup and one UW will watch with a lot of interest with the Ducks coming to Seattle on Thursday. I’m thinking the Ducks will come in with some momentum, using an offense that’s always more high-powered at home to subdue the Lopez twins just enough. OREGON 78, STANFORD 71.
SEASON RECORD: 17-1.
