Praise for Brockman

Arizona coach Kevin O’Neill had some nice things to say about UW forward Jon Brockman on the Pac-10 coaches conference call today.
Asked if Brockman, who scored 24 points against Arizona Saturday, has an NBA future, O’Neill said: “I would think that guy is going to have a chance to play for money somewhere. The NBA is a little bit different because size determines what position you play, and then you have to bring a certain skill to a certain position. I would say he is the kind of guy you would want on your team. He plays hard, really runs the floor well. I was really reallly impressed with him. I think he’s a really good player.”
I was among a group of writers Friday talking with O’Neill, who was head coach for a year with Toronto, when he was also asked about Brockman.
O’Neill quickly asked just how big Brockman really is — he’s listed at 6-7 — and said that will be the issue, whether Brockman is big enough to play (and specifically defend) the power forward position in the NBA.
Interestingly, Brockman isn’t mentioned at all in NBADraft.net’s mock draft for 2009 (see it here) — he isn’t on the 2008 draft, either — which seems kind of hard to believe but may speak to the uncertainty over what his role would be at the next level.
By the way, interesting to see how high UCLA guard Russell Westbrook is on the 09 mock (No. 11) — have to think his stock has risen as much as anybody’s in the conference this year.
