One of the interesting subplots to Thursday’s game is that it is the first meeting for UW senior Tim Morris against his former teammates at Stanford.
That’s what I wrote about for today’s paper.
Among the notes that didn’t make it in the paper is Morris downplaying that he’ll have any knowledge of the Cardinal that will help the Huskies Thursday.
“Their system has pretty much stayed the same for a while, but they’ve tweaked it some,” he said. “I’m sure a lot of their stuff is different now, a lot of their sets are different. I may know a few things, be able to recognize them a little quicker. But just like any fourth- or fifth-year guy, it’s a real intimate league and so I know Arizona’s sets, I know UCLA’s. I may have a little more knowledge, but it’s really the same that any senior might have.”
Also, in his Pac-10 notebook today, Bud Withers writes about where Kevin Love stands in the pantheon of conference centers, and also lists the best at each school since the Walton era.
His pick for UW is Christian Welp. Good cases could also be made for Todd MacCulloch and James Edwards. But I agree with Bud that Welp is hard to pass over since he does hold the school scoring and is the only one of those three who was ever a conference Player of the Year.
IN OTHER NEWS….
— Here are Jon Wilner’s Pac-10 notes and rankings from his College Hotline column (he has UW at No. 6).
— This is on ESPN’s Insider so all of you may not be able to access it, but John Hollinger puts former Husky Nate Robinson on his All-Sleeper team, pointing out that Robinson is averaging 14.7 points and 4.7 assists in 14 January games, shooting 47.1 percent. For the season he is averaging 20 points and five rebounds per 40 minutes.
— Here’s a good look at Stanford’s state this week from Scout.com.
— Here’s a look at Stanford’s improving teamwork from Palo Alto online.
Mike Tokito of the Oregonian has UW seventh in his weekly Pac-10 rankings.
— Lastly, the Eugene-Register Guard has UW sixth in its weekly rankings, as well as a lot of other conference notes.
