Husky Men's Basketball

The latest news and analysis on Husky men's hoops.

January 31, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Tonight’s picks

Four games on the docket tonight, assuming the Cougars and Cal don’t get snowed in.
And with Oregon State off, it means the one sure thing is off the board.
So here goes:
ARIZONA AT USC: Maybe the two hottest teams in the conference — USC has won four in a row, Arizona three — each including easy wins over UW in that stretch. Trojans have actually won three in a row against the Wildcats, including the last two at home. Also a matchup of the Pac-10’s best three-point offense (Arizona at 39.9 percent) and the best three-point defense (USC at 31.1). Winner of that battle figures to win the game. We’ll go with the home team. USC 77. ARIZONA 72.
ARIZONA STATE AT UCLA: Here’s where we really find out about the Sun Devils as they hit the road for three in a row at UCLA, USC and Arizona. Those freshmen may be about to hit the wall, though James Harden will be hyped to make a good first impression in his home town. But unless he can get 30 ASU figures to have a tough time. UCLA 67, ASU 52.
CAL AT WASHINGTON STATE: Cal both the most disappointing team in the conference at 2-5, as well as maybe the most hardluck — last three losses by five points or less or in double overtime. Cal’s main problem in conference play has been turnovers — a combined 16 more than opponents — and not getting enough out of senior center DeVon Hardin (10.1 points and just 5.6 rebounds in Pac-10 play). Cougs barely escaped a sweep last weekend in Arizona and look like they are hitting a little mid-season rut. But home crowds usually help get over that. WSU 62, CAL 56.
STANFORD AT WASHINGTON: Stanford has lost five in a row in Seattle, which probably doesn’t matter at all. What does is whether the Huskies can keep Brook Lopez from going off inside (and do it without Jon Brockman getting in any early foul trouble). Brook hasn’t fared that in two games against UW, with just 18 points and seven rebounds last season. But that was going up against Brockman and Hawes. His game in Seattle last year was one of his worst — six points, four rebounds in 24 minutes. Joe Wolfinger would seem a natural to get more time tonight. Huskies will need a good shooting night to offset likely difficulties scoring inside. We’ll go hesitantly with the home court advantage. WASHINGTON 69, STANFORD 62.
SEASON RECORD: 30-6
USC GAME ON TV: Also, we were just told that the USC game next Thursday will air on FSN Prime Ticket and Fox College Sports. FSN-NW will air the game on a delayed basis at 9:30 or 10 p.m.
