In keeping with the theme of my post yesterday looking ahead, I wrote today about Darnell Gant and how his redshirt season seems to be progressing. Everyone says so far, so good, though we’ll know for sure a few years from now when we see how his career progresses.
Some might wonder how UW’s season would be different had Gant not redshirted. I asked Gant that and he talked about how he was the one who made the decision to redshirt (for reasons detailed in the story) and that “I can’t say that if I was in the game I would make a difference (this year) because I’m not out there. I can’t say that until I’m actually out there.”
Gant, by the way, is a thoroughly engaging young man who sincerely seems to mean it when he concludes an interview by thanking you for talking to him. He also may be the first music major I’ve ever encountered on the UW basketball team. He said he began playing the piano at age 10 — when he made the trip for the LSU game (one of the few he has taken this year) he was a constant presence in the hotel lobby playing the piano, including the Charlie Brown Christmas song. But he has never taken lessons and wants to major in music so he can learn how to play formally.
IN OTHER NEWS:
— The San Jose Mercury News says Stanford is trying not to look too far ahead when it plays UW tonight.
— Something else for UW to deal with is that the Huskies will be the last home opponent for two coming up — Cal and Washington State — and is the first opponent for the last home weekend for Stanford. Those kinds of games generally elicit some extra emotion for the seniors, and the San Francisco Chronicle today detailed the Stanford seniors.
— Here’s the Stanford report from the Contra Costa Chronicle.
— Something called the SBRForum is taking the Huskies plus-11 tonight. (I’ll unveil my picks a little later).
— The Oregonian has a feature today on the Lopez Twins. In case you have forgotten, they are the younger brothers of Alex Lopez, who lettered at UW in 1995 under Bob Bender before transferring. The family lived in the Seattle area for a little while during that time and some at UW wonder now what might have been.
TheSpread.com also breaks down tonight’s game.
— And here’s a brief mention of Bobby Jones in the Houston Chronicle that details how the Rockets plan to evaluate him during the next 10 days.
All for now.
