ESPN airs allegations against USC

It’s not a happy Mother’s Day at USC where the school appears embroiled in another controversy, this one in basketball involving O.J. Mayo.
Here’s the report from ESPN as well as an overview from the USC blog at the LA Times.
A quick reading makes this sound as if it’s got a lot of similarities to the Reggie Bush deal involving the USC football program.
As I have written often on the football blog, I think the Pac-10 deserves the benefit of the doubt until we see what they do with the Bush situation. I get a lot of e-mails charging a double-standard compared to what happened with UW in the early ’90s.
But I think until we can read the completed investigation that we can’t criticize it. Once they announce what they have found and are doing with it, then we can judge.
What I also always point out is that it is different people in charge now, different people doing the investigating, and a completely different tenor about penalizing programs. I doubt anyone will get hit as hard as UW, Alabama, Miami and others did in the ’90s — there’s too much money at stake now.
And now USC and the Pac-10 has to deal with this Mayo situation, as well.
But just think — if Trojans have to forfeit all games Mayo played in last year, the Huskies might just finish with a winning record after all.
