More on Olson, a little on Hawes – UPDATED

Since out last post here — we were rudely interrupted by having to attend the Don James roast last night, which you can read about on the football site — the Lute Olson retirement became official.
Bud Withers of our staff did a nice job today putting it into perspective.
You can find all the Arizona Daily Star coverage here and everything from the Tucson Citizen here. ESPN has this looking at what is next and Fox Sports says Mike Dunlap may not want the interim job unless he can be the full-time coach.
UPDATE — In a surprising twist, Fox Sports says the interim coach won’t be Dunlap but rather Russ Pennell. Here’s a bio of Pennell.
We can now also close the book on Olson’s career against the Huskies. He was 36-15 in 51 games against UW, losing three of the first four and six of the last 10, meaning he lost only six games against UW from 1986-2004.
He won the last two against the Huskies, however, a 96-86 win on Jan. 4, 2007 in his last appearance at Hec Ed, and an 84-54 win at McKale on Feb. 3, 2007.
As we wrote yesterday, the most direct impact of this on UW is that Bellarmine Prep guard Abdul Gaddy is apparently re-opening his recruiting. However, conventional wisdom is that he’s likely headed to UCLA if he ultimately spurns the Wildcats.
ALSO TODAY, Times columnist Steve Kelley wrote this about former Husky Spencer Hawes.
FINALLY, please bear with us as we work out some kinks in the blogs after making some major technical canges earlier in the week. There are still some glitches affecting the comments section at times. If you have questions you want answered, just e-mail me directly at bcondotta@seattletimes.com and I’ll post them on the blog.
