Breaking down the roster

The future for the Washington Huskies looks a whole lot brighter today, doesn’t it, after last night’s news about Abdul Gaddy?
UW coach Lorenzo Romar seemed in a particularly good mood during Tuesday’s weekly press briefing, so maybe he knew something was about to pop. It did last night about 8 p.m. as Gaddy committed, putting a slam dunk of a finish to UW’s Class of 2009.
Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports calls the pickup “huge” saying the Huskies were lacking a “pass-first floor leader.”
Gaddy’s signing will undoubtedly boost UW’s class into the top 20 or so of the national rankings, and it also returns some of the luster to the Washington program lost during the struggles of the last two seasons. As one person told me last night “the Huskies are hot again.”
Indeed, with Arizona’s program in limbo, UW again looks like it can be an annual contender for the top half of the Pac-10 — if not the top two or three — for the next few seasons.
With Gaddy’s committing finishing the recruiting for this year, let’s look at how the roster breaks down the next two seasons.
08-09 roster

Comment: Given the vagaries of college basketball these days — guys leaving early for the NBA, etc. — having at least two players in each class actually seems like pretty good roster management.

Comment: That is indeed 14 committed scholarships for the 2009-10 season, so again everyone will be playing the game of trying to figure out where the extra ride will come from. One possibility, as I wrote last night, is that Garcia apparently has quite a ways to go to get eligibile. So it may be as simple as that. The other thing that jumps out is that is potentially a really loaded backcourt with Thomas, Overton, Gaddy, Suggs, Turner, Holiday and Wilcox, especially knowing that Gaddy has to stay at least two years. The days of three- and four-guard lineups may be in the offing for quite a while. It would seem as if it would be a big priority to get a couple of big men in the class of 2010. It also looks like it will be imperative that Gant and Breshers progress pretty quickly.
ON THE STARTING LINEUP — Stevie T. asked a good question in the comments section of the last post about what looks to be UW’s starting lineup if the team played a game today — Brockman, Pondexter, MBA, Dentmon and Thomas. His question was what the possibility of Dentmon starting says about Overton. I’m not sure such a lineup (which isn’t written in stone and hasn’t been stated publicly by Romar, just what it appears to look like at the moment) says as much about Overton as Dentmon.
Dentmon appears to be shooting better than ever and said again Tuesday he likes his new role as primarily a two guard. Outside shooting is something the team needs, and Dentmon I think is providing more of that right now while also adding a steadying influence as a senior.
