Brockman on the frosh

Not only is Jon Brockman one of the best players in college basketball but he is also one of the best quotes, always ready and willing with an insightful comment or two.
Such was the case today at Pac-10 media day when I asked him to assess how the team’s other freshmen besides Isaiah Thomas have played so far, which I did only because it seems like we’ve all written so much about Thomas, I wanted to hear what he thought of how the other four (including redshirt frosh Darnell Gant) are progressing.
So here goes:
Brockman on Tyreese Breshers: “I’m real impressed with Tyreese. He’s just kind of getting back in the swing of things but he’s a big body. He’s big and quick. We joke around that you look at him and you think there’s no way he can do what he does, and all the sudden he gets the ball and just springs into this kind of mad man. He’s a force. I think he’s going to be a great player.”
On Elston Turner: “Elston is just a really smart player who when he came in you can tell his dad is a coach. He’s been around basketball. He knows how it works. He’s not super athletic but he makes up for that in just out-thinking people. And he’s a great shooter.”
On Scott Suggs: “Scott, this last week he had a great week of practice. I think at first he was a little confused how things worked. He’s getting more aggressive. He’s like a mix between Justin Holiday and Bobby Jones. He’s real active and does a lot of stuff that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.”
On Darnell Gant: “People don’t realize how athletic he is. He’s an athlete and he’s working hard to get his weight up. He just has that body that can’t gain weight (Gant weighs about 220 right now). And he’s still not fully healthy so we haven’t seen everything that he can do. But just from seeing him last year, he’s a great shot blocker and a great defender because he’s really long. As soon as he gets the concepts down and realizes what he can do….”
Brockman then conclued by smiling and saying “I think the program is looking really good for the next few years. And I can’t say anything about it, but I hear it’s a good recruiting class (coming in next year).”
