A peak around the Pac

The Huskies make their first public appearance Thursday night, hosting Western Washington in an exhibition game.
But other teams around the conference are already getting started. Here’s a look:
— Oregon State opened with an 80-76 win over Saint Martin’s Sunday night. As OSU coach Craig Robinson had promised at media day last week, transfer forward Daniel Deane made an impact, scoring 15 points with six rebounds. The Beavers also announced that guard Calvin Haynes will be academically ineligible for the fall quarter.
Oregon beat Northwest Christian 82-56 on Sunday with guard Tajuan Porter scoring 23 points. Much-heralded freshman big man Michael Dunigan had 11 points and four blocks as seven freshmen made their debuts.
— Arizona suffered a scare when guard Nic Wise hurt his ankle in the team’s annual Red-Blue game over the weekend, but sounds as if he’s okay.
— UCLA debuts tonight against Cal Baptist.
— USC also opens tonight against Azusa Pacific.
— Cal has an interesting exhibition game Thursday night against Seattle Pacific in Berkeley.
All for now.
