Portland game thread

STUNNED — Jack Sikma’s son Luke put the proverbial nail in the coffin with a free throw in the final five seconds. It’s over. Portland 80-74.
HUSKIES CIRLING THE DRAIN — UW trails 77-72 with 22.5 seconds left. Romar just took a timeout.
UP IS ON A 8-0 RUN — The Pilots lead 70-66 with 3:03 left.
THOMAS FOULS OUT — With 3:52 remaining, the freshman dove for a loose ball and flew head first into a Pilot. The refs gave him a foul, which was a very questionable call. Anyway, he’s gone. UW leads 66-64.
IT’S A NAIL-BITER — UW leads 64-62 with 5:49 left.
BROCKMAN CONTINUES DOMINANCE — His layup with gave UW a 63-60 lead with less than eight minutes left.
THOMAS COLLECTS FOURTH FOUL — Romar has decision to make. Thomas looks like he’s heating up after a slow first half. He connected on a pair of short jumpers. But he’ll sit the bench for awhile. UW trails 53-50 with 11:45 left.
TIMEOUT — Romar takes an early timeout with 16:17 remaining. He’s got problems. Thomas is sitting with three fouls, Brockman is the only one giving him any consistent points and Portland is shooting the lights out from the perimeter. UW trails 49-39.
QUICK STATS — Brockman 16 points and 8 rebounds. Dentmon 8 points. Thomas 5 points. Pondexter 0 points on 0-for-2 shooting. UW is shooting 46.2 percent (12 of 26) from the field and just 14.3 percent (1 of 7) on threes. UW has 11 turnovers. Portland is shooting 33.3 percent (10 of 30). UP has just three turnovers. Raivio leads UP with 13 points. Niedermeyer and Smeulders have 8 points each.
HALFTIME — Wow. UW trails 37-34.
UW CLIMBES BACK — Brockman drained a FT to tie the score and Overton sank another FT to give the Huskies a 34-33 lead with 1:29.
BROCKMAN CLIMBS SCORING LIST — He’s tied with George Irvin (1,314) for 17th on the schoo’s all-time list.
BROCKMAN TO THE RESCUE — Finally. The big man has scored the UW’s last 10 points. He’s dominating down low. It’s surprising it took Romar so long to figure out UP has no one that can hold him down. What’s troubling is UW has allowed layups on the last two possession. UW trails 33-24.
PONDEXTER PICKS UP HIS THIRD FOUL — He’s on the bench with 6:18 left. He’s scoreless on 0-for-2 shooting shooting and has just one rebound.
TIMEOUT — UW trails 28-18 with 7:37 left. Brockman has just four points. The Huskies are finally making an effort to feed him down low. It’s a wonder why they waited so long. They are getting next to nothing from anyone else. The guards can’t penetrate and the shooters are finding a hand in their face. What’s most troubling, UW has 10 turnovers.
BROCKMAN SHOWS UP — With 8:42 remaining, the All-America candidate scored his first points on a pair FTs. UW still trails 26-14. And it’s not really close. The Pilots are outplaying them on both ends.
EARLY SCARE — UW down 15-7. Portland is running the same baseline curl to get a shooter open on the right wing. Niedermeyer hit a three-pointer once and UP is running its offense off that play. The UW has committed five straight turnovers and lost the ball on six of the last seven possessions. Just silly TOs. Three offensive fouls, traveling on Wolfinger and palming call on Overton.
TIMEOUT — UW trails 10-7. Joe Wolfinger is in for Gant. Thomas has three points. Wolfinger scored on a layup after a nice pass from Pondexter. Washington is having great difficulty getting into its offense. Brockman has attempted just one shot, an short baseline jumper.
FIRST SUB — Venoy Overton replaces Dentmon with 16:51 remaiing and UW leading 5-4.
PORTLAND SCORES FIRST — Ravio sank two free throws for a 2-0 lead. Thomas took UW first shot, an errant three-pointer.
NEARING TIP-OFF — The stands behind the sidelines are filling up. It looks to be a good crowd. The student section is already starting in on Thomas with little-man cracks. They’re also getting on Brockman for his comments on a video about having more Facebook friends than anyone on the team. It’s a wonder how these kids know so much. Amazing.

PRE-GAME NOTES: We tried to clone Bob Condotta and failed. Since he can’t be in two places at the same time we drew straws and unfortunately for him grabbed the short one and is coverinig the UW football game while Percy Allen will cover tonight’s game.
While we’re on the theme of replacements, just ran into Mike Gastineau who is subbing for play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and will call the game tonight with color man Jason Hamilton. The broadcast can be heard on KKNW 1150-AM.
We’ll start the thread with news on Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who injured his hip, knee and ankle last week after falling to the court and will not play tonight against the Pilots. Without MBA, UW loses one of its top reserves who scored 12 points in an exhibtion win against Western Washington. It will be interesting to seek if Coach Lorenzo Romar goes with a smaller lineup or gives Darnell Gant more minutes.
It’s been a long day for Huskies. They got up at 8:30 a.m. for an early shootaround at Chiles Center at 9:30 a.m. Portland had a volleyball match in the afternoon, which forced the UW to take the court so early.
Otherwise, things are copasetic. It’s about 30 minutes befor tip-off and both teams are on the court. It’s a a pretty decent crowd, which may be the result of the late time change. Many fans were unaware the game was pushed back to 8 p.m.
