CSU helps Huskies and looking at the Pac

Sometimes, good news comes in far-off places.
Tonight for the Huskies, it arrived in Syracuse where Cleveland State — remember the Vikings? — pulled one of the stunning upsets of the college basketball season so far, beating the Orange on the road with a 60-foot shot at the buzzer.
That’s the same CSU team that the Huskies blasted on Nov. 18, 78-63. That should give UW’s strength of schedule and RPI a little unexpected boost. It was the first loss of the season for Syracuse, ranked No. 11.
Cleveland State is now 7-4 and its biggest loss, in terms of margin of defeat, is the one at UW.
Also interesting tonight is this look at the Pac-10 from the Oregonian, in which Pac-10 writer Mike Tokito declares UW one of three teams in the conference better than it was a year ago along with Arizona State and Oregon State (I think I’d throw Cal in there, as well. The Bears are 7-2 and only one loss was really bad, a blowout at an 8-1 Missouri team. The other was as three-pointer on a neutral court to a 9-1 Florida State team that just beat Florida).
Tokito also passes along the interesting stat that Arizona’s win over Gonzaga was the first this season for a Pac-10 team against a ranked opponent. The conference had been 0-9 previously, which included UW’s losses to Kansas and Florida.
