RPI yo-yoing

So much for that RPI boost the Huskies got the other night when Cleveland State won at Syracuse.
Last night, Portland State suffered a surprising loss at Cal Poly, a Mustangs team that is probably better than you think but which entered the week with an RPI of 189.
And that helped drag UW’s RPI from a 63 on Tuesday, following CSU’s win, to 74 today, according to RealTimeRPI.com.
Also not helping is that Texas Southern is emerging as one of the worst teams in the nation — Gonzaga plays them tonight on FSN — and that Portland also continues to lose, most recently falling to Northern Colorado. Portland’s RPI has gone from 78 to 119 in the last week.
Somewhat surprisingly, UW could get a little RPI boost by winning Saturday as Eastern Washington currently has a higher RPI than the Huskies at 67. Eastern is 6-3 and two of the losses are at Illinois and Minnesota, each ranked in the top 30 in the RPI (the other is at Hawaii).
I realize this may seem like a lost of energy spent on the RPI in the middle of December (it probably is). But UW looks an awful lot like a bubble team this year and the RPI could end up making a difference come March.
