PSU’s shocking win gives UW a little more RPI help

Wow. For the second straight week, the Huskies get some unexpected RPI help in rather shocking fashion.
Last week, it was Cleveland State winning at Syracuse on a 60-foot shot at the buzzer.
Tonight it was Portland State and former UW assistant Ken Bone going to Spokane and beating Gonzaga 77-70, just the third loss for the Bulldogs in their new arena. Another former Husky, Phil Nelson, hit the key shot of the game, a three-pointer with 49 seconds left that broke a tie.
Here are the details.
That makes UW’s one-point win over PSU, and without Jon Brockman, look a lot better. UW had a 52 RPI immediately after the game according to RealTimRPI.com, but this could be a win that helps the Huskies out all season long.
It was a pretty big upset that PSU was able to even get there. As this story from the Oregonian details, PSU’s travel plans were pretty severely disrupted by all the, uh, great weather we’ve been having.
I read that story earlier today and figured GU would win by 25 or so.
Instead, the Vikings took an early lead and never went away.
Gonzaga has lost three of four since that blowout at Washington State that seemed indicate the Bulldogs truly were a top five team. Maybe they just had a hangover after disappointing OT loss here Saturday to UConn.
Whatever the case, Ken Bone’s reputation is shining a whole lot brighter tonight, and the Huskies are again the residual benefactors of one of the season’s more surprising results.
