My Top 25 — Huskies are in

Monday brings with it the announcement of a new AP Top 25.
And it’s one that for the first time since the last week of Dec., 2006 figures to include the Huskies.
I just sent in my ballot and for the first time this season I have the Huskies in it after their impressive weekend sweep of the LA schools. I slotted UW at No. 21.
I have the Huskies ahead of UCLA, which obviously only seems right, but behind Arizona State. Loyal readers of this blog may note I had UW ahead of ASU in my Pac-10 rankings. However, I regard the AP poll a little differently, more of an assessment of the entire season as well as simply where they are this week, and I think ASU still deserves a slight nod when considering the entire season. There is also the fact that I had ASU 19th in my poll last week and obviously the Devils deserved only to move up after winning at Arizona, giving them wins at Pauley Pavilion and the McKale Center in two straight games.
When debating, then, where to put UW, I also had to consider where I had Kansas. The Jayhawks obviously routed UW when the two played, and since have put together just about an identical resume — Kansas is 15-4 and undefeated in the Big 12 at 4-0 (granted, the Jayhawks have played maybe the four worst teams in the Big 12 to get to that point, but the record is what it is). Though I believe far too much emphasis can be put on head-to-head when considering the rankings — nobody’s putting Boston College ahead of North Carolina right now, for instance — in this case it seems pretty applicable since the resumes of the two teams are so similar.
So I basically figured UW had to be a spot or two behind Kansas. As is common now that league play has started, there were a lot of defeats by top 25 teams this week. Kansas, however, won twice, so I moved the Jayhawks up from 25 to 20 and decided to put UW a spot behind at 21.
Feeling the Pac-10 deserves three teams, I kept UCLA in the poll, moving Cal out after its home loss to Oregon State and a two-week stretch that hasn’t been all that good.
As for the top spot, it could be close to a unanimous pick this week for Duke after Wake Forest’s home loss to Virginia Tech while the Blue Devils were beating NC State and Maryland decisively. The shockingly easy rout of Maryland was particularly impressive — that’s what a No. 1 team looks like.
Duke and Wake play this week, however, so there could be another shakeup next week.
Here’s my complete Top 25:
1, Duke
2, Connecticut
3, Pitt
4, Oklahoma
5, Wake Forest
6, North Carolina
7, Louisville
8, Marquette
9, Texas
10, Michigan State
11, Clemson
12, Butler
13, Xavier
14, Notre Dame
15, Arizona State
16, Syracuse
17, Villanova
18, Memphis
19, Purdue
20, Kansas
21, Washington
22, Illinois
23, UCLA
24, Florida
25, Gonzaga
