Monday afternoon notes, links

As the headline says. …
— There are, of course, dozens of bracketology-type deals out there and I tend to focus on ESPN’s just because it’s the most well-known and the one that people in the sport seem to pay attention to the most. Among the others is that from SI.com, which has UW as a No. 4 seed in Boise playing Northern Iowa in the first round, then possibly meeting Illinois in the second and North Carolina in the Sweet 16.
— Speaking of Joe Lunardi, who does the ESPN Bracketology linked earlier, an associate of mine here at the Times said he was watching him on ESPN News and that he said UW is the weakest of the No. 4 seeds. But he apparently also said a road win at UCLA could make them a No. 3. He listed them as one of four teams with ”the most to lose” this week.
Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury news finally has UW in his top 25. Wilner is also a little more skeptical of the strength of the Pac-10 and raises a valid question — what’s changed since January to make anyone think the conference is better than people thought then? I’d argue the biggest thing is UCLA’s massive win over Notre Dame, which then blew out Louisville in its next game, while the Bruins then got swept by the Arizona schools. That seems to give a little more validity to the conference’s strength this year. I’d also cite a team like Washington State, which in its last non-conference game could have easily won on the road at LSU, but since has obviously struggled in Pac-10 play and right now, could easily end up ninth.
— Stat maven Ken Pomeroy continues to have the Pac-10 ranked second among all conferences, as well. Pomeroy has UW 19th in the country but only third in the conference behind UCLA and Arizona State. And he sees UCLA winning 81-73 Thursday.
— A good place to keep in touch with UCLA news this week is Brian Dohn’s blog at the LA Daily News. The Orange County Register also has a UCLA blog.
— The Oregonian has a good look at UCLA’s lost weekend in the desert as well as a ton of links.
— I have plans to do my own assessment this week of the final three weekends of the Pac-10 race and how it may unfold. Nick Daschel of Buster Sports has his own view here and also says UW has a 5-2 chance to win the title.
All for now.
