My Top 25

It was evident this week that March Madness is nearing as just about everybody in the Top 25 seemed to lose.
That meant a shakeup at the top as Pitt moves back into the No. 1 spot, with a little juggling of some of the rest of the top 10, as well. To me, the big mystery in the top group right now is Memphis, which I have at No. 5.
The Tigers are unmistakeably hot, having not lost since Dec. 20. On the other hand, their conference just isn’t all that good this year — ranked 10th in the RPI, barely ahead of the Horizon League. But this is also a young team that seems to be improving — witness its blowout of Gonzaga a few weeks ago. But for now, to me, the Tigers are still a step below the other top four.
As for the Pac-10 teams, I have three in — UW at 15, ASU at 16 and UCLA at 24. I’m sure there will be some wondering why I still have the Bruins in after they have lost three of their last four. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong on this, but I’m among those who thinks the Pac-10 is a little better than advertised was early on, so to me, it’s not unreasonable to have the No. 3 team in the Pac-10 ranked among the Top 25 teams. It was just two weeks ago UCLA blew out Notre Dame and looked like a Top 10 team in the process.
As for UW, the Huskies did obviously lose this week. But they also concluded a fairly brutal stretch of six-of-eight on the road 5-3 (3-3 in the road games) and still atop the conference. For now, their standing at the top of the Pac-10 and having won at ASU is why they remain ahead of the Sun Devils in my rankings.
Here’s my complete Top 25:
1, Pitt
2, Connecticut
3, Oklahoma
4, North Carolina
